2016-17 Buffalo Men’s Basketball Previews: Nikola Rakicevic

Nikola Rakicevic shows a lot of potential to be a lights out shooter for the Bulls as long as he can get acquainted to American basketball.

The Basics

Number: 42

Year: Sophomore

Position: Wing

Hometown: Smederevska Palanka, Serbia

Height: 6-5, 185 lbs.

New to Buffalo?

Nope

UB Career

Rakicevic spent his freshman season in a backseat role after arriving to Buffalo from his home in Serbia. Rakicevic was a member of the U-17 national team there and was named to the All-Tournament team of the U-17 World Championships while averaging 12.4 points and 5.7 rebounds per game. Unsurprisingly though, Nikola’s biggest challenge has been coming to terms with how to play the American game. Last season, Rakicevic played 20 games off of the bench, playing only about 8 minutes per game. His best showing came against Delaware in which he scored 14.

2016-17 Outlook

Give Rakicevic another year and I’ll think he’ll start making the impact that both he probably wants to. For now, I still see “Johnny” — a nickname given by Coach Oats himself — giving some strong bench minutes throughout the season, especially in situations where Buffalo is in foul trouble.
