Volleyball adds Transfer Outside Hitter and new Assistant Coach

UB Volleyball has added 6–1 outside hitter Monika Šimkova, a transfer from Long Beach State, who will have three years of eligibility at Buffalo. Šimkova played on the U19/U20 team for Slovakia back in 2014, and has appeared on that team in each subsequent year. Buffalo has only three returning pin hitters, so her addition gives depth at those positions. She has also played the right-side attacker position; no one on the roster currently is listed as a right-side attacker although junior Polina Prokudina played out-of-position at right-side during 2018. Šimkova played all six rotations at Long Beach State and internationally.

Buffalo now has 8 players who could return from last year's squad, 7 announced incoming freshmen, and two announced transfers. That would be a roster of 17 players, and only 12 scholarships. That's an unusually large roster, and so (pure speculation now, not based on any inside information) I think it is likely that not all 17 will be on the team in the fall. Typically the roster gets updated during the summer to include those players likely to be on the team.

David Beck has been added as an assistant coach. He recently served as a volunteer assistant coach at the University of Virginia, where he trained the pin hitters and worked with the defense. Before that, he was a graduate assistant at Georgia Southern, the same school where new UB coach Scott Smith was before he joined UB. Beck played his collegiate volleyball at Grand Canyon University.
