No “q1” or “q2” wins, that’s about the only way you can spin this..
UB comes in a top 30 RPI team, a 26 win team, a conference champion, and a team with no bad losses. That should have been good enough for an 11, or a 12 at the worst. But the selection committee gave UB a 13 seed and put them up against Arizona.
Since expanding to 64 teams in 1985, there have been twenty-one 14 seeds that have defeated 3 seeds (15.9%) in the first round. It’s a much taller order then the 12 seeds which win about 35% of the time.
The game is in first round of the South Regional of the NCAA Tournament on Thursday in Boise.
Arizona won the PAC-12 tournament and clinched their auto-bid this week. We will have a more in depth look at them in the coming days.
