Buffalo Bulls Football Vs. Army Black Knights Game Preview

NCAA Football: Buffalo at Minnesota Jesse Johnson-USA TODAY Sports

The Buffalo Bulls are back for week two! UB is coming off a well played game in which the Bulls we’re beaten by the Minnesota Golden Gophers 17-7. While a loss is never what you want, I took away a lot of positives from a strong performance against a B1G school. This weeks opponent, the Army Black Knights, are coming off a dominating 64-6 victory against FCS Fordham. I had a chance to watch some of that game and I can assure you that Fordham played one of the worst football games I’ve ever seen, so take the score with a grain of salt. That all being said, let’s preview this game!

What to Expect

Army runs a triple option. Everybody knows that. What that means is the Bulls, who have struggled against the run in the past, need to step up and make some tackles. If you recall from last years match up with the Black Knights, Buffalo came out slow and made adjustments to stop the run late in the game. I think that UB can’t come out slow in this game, and needs the defense to be rolling early to have a shot and quiet the cadets in the stands.

As for the offense. I didn’t get too good a look on the Army defense (mainly because Fordham had a penalty on it’s first 4 plays). What I do know is what I saw from the Bulls. Tyree Jackson looked improved and Anthony Johnson is a weapon. If this pairing continues to grow throughout the season, I expect big things from the Bulls. In this game, I want to see longer drives. Against Minnesota, the Bulls didn’t have many 3 and outs, but they did stall around mid field often. I want to see drives finished in this game and hopefully field goals converted when the opportunity is there.

Players To Watch

Khalil Hodge

I love having another good linebacker named Khalil. Hodge currently leads the nation in tackles with 20 and that’s just in one game. This match up against the triple option sets up well for another big game from Hodge.

Ahmad Bradshaw

The Army quarterback is a threat with his legs. His arm is not the best but when you can run the way he does you don’t have to pass. The Bulls need penetration on the line of scrimmage to take him down. Also, I find it funny that the Army QBs are Ahmad Bradshaw and Chris Carter, two Ex NFL names.

Anthony Johnson

Can the Bulls new receiver put up another strong game? I sure hope the answer is yes.

Final Thoughts

I think the Bulls have a good chance to take the win this week. I’m feeling good about the team as a whole this year and I don’t see it stopping just yet. Army is the type of game that feels like a test for MAC play. I have the Bulls winning this one 24-13 after a strong game all around. I hope I’m right when it comes to the result, but we will find out soon enough. Until next time, horns up!
