Buffalo Bulls Men’s Basketball Game Preview: Bowling Green Falcons

First things first, everyone take a deep breath, because it’s going to be a crazy, fun. stressful night of basketball. At this point everyone knows what is at stake tonight. A win will result in a first round bye and automatic qualification to Cleveland. However, depending on other results, the Bulls could be anywhere from 2-4 after a win.

I’m not going to get in to all the details of seeding implications. If you’d like that, go and check out Matt’s post from earlier today. What I plan to look at is what the Bulls need to do in order to take down the Bowling Green Falcons. So let’s not waste any time, and take a look.

What to Watch For

Is the team focused in on the game at hand

In a situation like this, it’s easy to be eager to look at other scores. Obviously, Alumni Arena does not project other MAC scores but it still may be in the back of everyone’s mind. Buffalo is a much better team than Bowling Green. But as we have seen this season, anyone can beat anyone. If the Bulls are not laser focused on getting the job done tonight, I feel they are in for a big let down.

Blake Hamilton

During the six game winning streak, it seemed as if Blake Hamilton could do no wrong. Recently, he’s had his struggles where it looks like he’s trying to be the do it all guy again. Hamilton needs to go back to what was working during the winning streak and start looking to pass more. When he is a facilitator, it opens up lanes more where his scoring can come back.

This game feels huge for him to get some confidence heading in to the MAC tournament. A good end to the regular season can spark a player heading in to the postseason, and we are going to need all hands on deck if the Bulls want to 3 peat as champions.

Can the Bulls push the tempo

I haven’t watched Bowling Green too much this season, but from what I’ve seen, I can assure you the Bulls are the most athletic. They’re probably the most athletic in the MAC, but I digress. I think when UB gets out in transition they can not be stopped. CJ Massinburg has been great in getting to the rim and finishing. If this continues, no way the Falcons come close to keeping up. They rely too much on the three and tired legs will limit their ability to shoot well.

Final Thoughts

Today is one of those days that you just love March. It’s stressful, but it’s fun. At this point as a fan, just worry about Buffalo winning tonight. If you want to have some rooting interest in other games go with WMU and yes, even Akron. A win tonight goes way past just a bye for me though. It has the Bulls heading to Cleveland on a two game winning streak and 8/10 to end the season. That’s the kind of streak I want coming in to a major tournament. In the end, enjoy tonight, because it’ll only get crazier from here.
