Buffalo Bulls hire South Dakota football operations director Luke Groth

New, 15 comments

Buffalo's Director of football operations, Paul Bittar, was assigned other duties within the Buffalo athletic department last month and the Bulls have now hired a new face to take over football operations.

Luke Groth was the director of football operations and on-campus recruiting at South Dakota, and before that worked at.... you guessed it... Wisconsin White Water.

Groth has held the DFO title at the University of South Dakota since 2012.  But for two years before that he was at DIII Wisconsin-Whitewater as their Director of Football Operations and assistant to the Athletic Director. This is another Leipold overlap hire so Groth does have some DIII national titles on his resume. The Warhawks won national titles both years.

Prior to his time at UWW, Groth was a graduate assistant and director of football operations for the Minnesota State Mavericks, a DII program, from 2009-10. While in the twin cities he also served as a football operations intern for the Minnesota Vikings.

So what's a DFO?

He was responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Coyotes' football program, including team travel, budget oversight, future scheduling, coordination of team meals and meetings, football even management and social media.

My gut reaction is that this is a decent hire. I mean he was the DFO at a DII school that made the playoffs, a DIII school that won a national title, and even worked some time in the NFL.

.... But ....

I am slightly concerned we keep picking off UWW coaches and staff.

It would be one thing if UB had been a successful program the past two years but the near wholesale import of UWW staff has not made this program substantively better.

In the interest of being fair Leipold only had two seasons so, peraps, things will come together and the White Water folks can feed me some crow in the next year or two. I certainly look forward to such a dining experience.
