#64 UB Football Game

October 8, 2005 - UB 7, Kent State 13

After a great first start at Western Michigan, the beginning of Drew Willy's first home start was amazing. Willy went 3 for 5 for 37 yards as UB scored on their opening drive to take a 7-0 lead.

The rest of the game, Willy went 9 for 20 for 34 yards as Akron pulled the plug on the UB offense which had just found their rhythm.

After a myriad of punts, UB got the game's next break when Akron fumbled a punt return giving UB the ball 34 yards away from a TD. UB drove down to the 21 but Michael Baker missed the 38 yard field goal. UB ended the half up 7-0.

In the second half, Akron started to build momentum. The Zips drove to the UB 24 yard line but failed on a 4th down attempt. On their next drive, they drove to the 23 but missed a 41 yard field goal. On the next drive, Akron missed a field goal from 45 yards. UB went 3 and out on every drive of the 3rd quarter.

On the final play of the 3rd quarter, Akron had the ball 3rd and 1 on the UB 23. Rob Schroeder and Antohny Adriano stuffed Akron's Brett Biggs for a 3 yard loss. Akron went for the ensuing 4th and 4, and converted with a pass down to the 3 yard line. On the next play, Akron scored a touchdown.

After 5 consecutive three and outs, UB had a one play drive, a Drew Willy interception which led to Akron's 2nd field goal of the quarter and a 13-7 lead. UB's final drive moved to the 40 yard line before going backwards 26 yards. On 4th and 36, UB's desperation heave fell incomplete. Despite leading for 41 minutes and 5 seconds, Akron escaped Buffalo with a 6 point win after scoring 13 unanswered in the 4th quarter. The win put Akron at 3-2 (2-1). They would finish 3-3 yet win the tiebreaker for the MAC East title and they slipped by NIU to win the 2005 MAC Championship.
