Buffalo defensive line coach John Scott Jr. has accepted a job as assistant defensive line coach with the NFL’s New York Jets, according to sources. The move ends Scott’s tenure with the Bulls after just over a month. He had previously been Texas Tech’s defensive line coach for two seasons before resigning in early December.

In his brief time at Buffalo Coach Scott helped new UB coach Lance Leipold win recruiting battles for Justin Brandon and Charles Harris. Both players may play a big part in UB's new 4-3 defense.

Before coming to Buffalo Scott was the defensive line coach for Texas Tech under head coach Kliff Kingsbury. He served at the position for two seasons before resigning on December 6th after the line failed to impress. It's worth noting that the SBNation site "Viva the Matadors" who covers Texas Tech says that the personnel issue in Lubbock did present a challenge.

In terms of production, Scott was relatively young and the defensive line, I think because of personnel, had issues doing much of anything in terms of stopping opposing offenses.

From 1995-1998 Scott played his college ball as a defensive lineman at Western Carolina. Subsequently he had pro stints in the AFL and with the Canadian Football League (Montreal).

When professional football did not work out, Scott went into coaching at West Davidson High School in Lexington, N.C. as a defensive line coach. He then was on the staff at Louisiana-Lafayette for three seasons as a Graduate Assistant.

What does this say about Buffalo? Well it says that Coach Leipold and company have an eye for defensive line coaches. Both coaches Leipold has had at the position were hired to bigger positions (Defensive Coordinator) or hired by the big show (NFL).
