Heading into this evening's matchup with the Bowling Green Falcons, first year head coach Blair Brown Lipsitz's squad was inching closer to a MAC tournament berth and a win would almost all but guarantee the Bulls a spot in the tournament for the second straight season.
UB dominated the first set 25-17, but the remaining 3 were tighter with scores of 24-26, 25-23, 25-21. However, the UB offense improved out of the half and the Bulls were able to take the match 3-1 and outhit the Falcons .217 to .096. UB is now sitting at 6-7 in the MAC, which is the most wins since joining the conference and last year's total.
Individually, Madison Clark had a stellar performance in the first set, serving UB to their first 9 points; while fellow freshman Cassie Shado had two kills and two blocks during that span. Shado would go on to finish with 14 kills and a team leading 7 blocks. Clark would finish with a team high 50 assists and 10 digs and in the place of the missing Marissa Prinzbach.
Senior Akelia Lain and freshman Megan Wernette both hit above .300 for the match as well; with Megan Lipski pitching in 20 kills and 16 digs.
The win combined with EMU's loss to CMU reduces UB's magic number for the MAC tournament down to 1. At this point a berth in the tournament is all but locked up and given where this team was earlier in the season, the growth shown has been astounding.
The Bulls will be back in action tomorrow in Alumni Arena taking on Miami of Ohio at 7 pm.
