Sport By Sport Analysis of Danny White's Tenure

Ken Blaze-USA TODAY Sports

Football (B)

Danny White's biggest mistake at UB was the Quinstention. In defense of our departing director he did not hire Quinn but he did give him a 5 year deal after he went just 6-27 against FBS opponents in 3 years.

The next year Quinn get the team withing 30 minutes of a division title and still managed to take UB to a Bowl game so it was not a total loss.

His most recent hire, Lance Leipold, has UB poised for a possible Bowl run this year. That would mean in Danny White's 3.5 years of work at UB the team would have went to two Bowls.

Men's Basketball (A)

Firing Reggie Witherspoon turned Danny White into public enemy number one in the eyes of the Buffalo media. It's how he earned the label "brash".

His hoops hire, Bobby Hurley, took UB to the NCAA tournament. Then Hurley went off to ASU and the same people who savaged White for firing Spoon took aim at him again for losing Hurley.

But PR aside Danny White got UB off the list of NCAA teams who have never been to a tournament.

Women's Basketball (B+)

White walked onto UB right after the job for Women's Basketball opened up. His hire, Felisha Legette Jack has taken UB to the MAC semi-finals and to the Womans NIT

Baseball (C+)

One of the few sports with no coaching change under White. Baseball enjoyed some of their best seasons since UB reinstated the program nearly two decades ago.

But facilities saw little to no improvement and to the best of my knowledge the team still maintains the minimum number of allowable NCAA scholarships.

Softball (B)

White hires Trena Peel, and increased the program's budget. The payoff was a trip to last years MAC final, a first for the program. Nan Miller Field is in need of an upgrade given Buffalo's weather, and the team has lost multiple home games a year as a result.

Men's Soccer (A)

The Men just gave Akron a game in the MAC final. Danny White hired Stu Riddle from MAC rival and under Riddle the team has seen improved recruiting and results on the field.

Women's Soccer (A+)

Made a risky move by firing a head coach only to hire his assistant. The promotion of Burke led to back to back MAC East titles, a MAC Championship in 2014 and a trip to the semifinals this season. The team has just set a program record for wins over two years.

Men's Tennis (A)

It was already a decent program when White got here so he kept coach Nickell. And after years of being a conference power with no championships UB got the hardware last season.

Women's Tennis (B)

White promoted Coach Twist and Kristen Ortman-Maines. Recruiting is showing an uptick and the program continues to be one competitive in the MAC.

Rowing (B)

When he had to make a coaching change due to retirement he stayed on the current staff and the program continues to be competitive in the Colonial Athletic Association.

Volleyball (Somewhere between A and F depending on who you talk to)

Todd Kress had a good season in 2013 but there was some serious drama off the court. So Kress was fired and UB hired a big name in Reed Sunahara. Sunahara got UB to the MAC post season last year and was then hired away.

White went young by hiring former Penn State star Blair Brown Lipsitz. Year one started off rough but a decent run late in the season has sent the team back to the MAC tournament as the highest seed in program history.

Wrestling (A)

Took over a broken team on probation. He hired former UB great John Stutzman who has been recruiting wonderfully and it's starting to pay dividends this season.

Swimming and Diving (B)

Took over two great programs and kept them performing well in the MAC. But overall the needle has not moved and the teams have no team championships.

Track (A)

UB just produced a national champion (Jon Jones) and two other All Americans Ryan Billian in 2014 and Mike Morgan in 2015.

Cross Country (B+)

The team still has a ways to go in the MAC but they have put up the best results in a decade.
