Buffalo Bulls Football Season Highlight Video: Jeff Quinn vs Alex Wood

Prepare yourself for some very scientific stuff here on Bull Run.

The UB Football season highlight video dropped on Twitter this afternoon, and after my initial reactions of "Get it on the blog!" and "Hozier for the soundtrack? Alrighty, then" subsided, I realized I had to pick through the video and tally up the plays by whether they happened in the Alex Wood era or the Jeff Quinn era.

Note that I'm doing the tally as I write this post. On the face of it, the Quinn era should have the advantage, as it does in total games (7-4), wins (3-2), and total points scored (231-130). We did not, unfortunately, see any highlights from the #NotGame, one of the most exhilarating 4 hours of the year.

Anyway, here we go:

0:10 - Burgers on a grill. Game: Undetermined. Era: Undetermined

0:13 - Kristjan Sokoli shaking hands during the Stampede Square Bulls on Parade-but-Bulls on Parade because that's probably trademarked thing. Game: Undetermined. Era: It's a daytime game, so Quinn.

0:14 - Cheerleaders in the Stampede Square Bulls on Parade-but-Bulls on Parade because that's probably trademarked thing. Game: Undetermined. Era: Daylight and short sleeves? Quinn.

0:16 - A sack. Game: Army. Era: Quinn.

0:17 - A seemingly successful inside screen pass. Game: Eastern Michigan. Era: Late Quinn

0:19 - A quick slant touchdown to Campbell, used by the local news on loop for weeks. Game: Akron. Era: Wood.

0:24 - Fans. Game: Undetermined. Era: If (input=sunshine), then (output=Quinn). Quinn.

0:28 - A tackle and forced fumble. Game: Army. Please note that this is two defensive highlights from Army, already. Era:Quinn.

0:30 - A nice crossing route to Shreck. Game: Bowling Green. Era: Quinn

0:34 - A sack. Game: Bowling Green. Era: Quinn.

0:38 - Taylor's bounce outside for a TD. Game: Baylor. Era: Quinn

0:43 - A blocked field goal. Game: Bowling Green. Era: Quinn

0:46 - Tony Daniel to Malcolm Robinson, one of the prettiest TDs of the year. Game: Baylor. Era: Quinn

0:54 - A crossing-route TD. Game: Miami. Era: Quinn

0:58 - A TFL. Game: Norfolk State. Era: Quinn

One minute into the video and the Quinn Era has a big lead. Despite UB going 3-4 in the games so far represented, only four plays from winning games have been shown.

1:01 - An inside run, bounced through to the second level. Game: Duquesne. Era: Quinn.

1:04 - A sack. Game: Central Michigan. Era: Early Wood.

1:07 - People in UB gear in the sunshine.

1:08 - A color guard and coin flip. Game: Akron. Era: Wood

1:08 - A rushing touchdown and celebration. Game: Miami. Era: Quinn

1:14 - A touchdown to Weiser. Game: Eastern Michigan. Era: Late Quinn

1:17 - A sack. Game: Central Michigan. Era: Early Wood

1:19 - A TD pass to Campbell. Game: Akron. Era: Wood

1:47 - A TD pass. Game: Central Michigan. Era: Early Wood

1:51 - A long Campbell kick return. Game: Bowling Green. Era: Quinn

1:54 - A sack. Game: Baylor. Era: Quinn

1:57 - A TD pass to Hughes. Game: Army. Era: Quinn

Two minutes in and while we're getting some Wood, it's still overwhelmingly Quinn.

2:02 - A forced fumble. Game: Akron. Era: Wood.

2:06 - A sack. Game: Bowling Green. Era: Quinn

Crowd Shots.

2:10 - Johnson to Weiser. Game: Akron. Era: Wood

2:20 - A sack. Game: Norfolk State. Era: Quinn

2:28 - An inside screen to Hughes for a TD. Game: Baylor. Era: Quinn

2:37 - A sack. Game: Norfolk State. Era: Quinn

Airplanes. Crowd shots.

2:42 - A Campbell catch-and-run TD. Game: Army. Era: Quinn

2:49 - Jacob Martinez! Game: Akron. Era: Wood

2:57 - A sack. Game: Duquesne. Era: Quinn

The third minute brings us to more crowd shots and longer highlights, cutting into Wood's share even as we get into the end of the season. Also, lots of defensive plays from the Quinn Era even though the defense was much stronger under Wood.

3:02 - A Willoughby catch. Game: Baylor. Era: Quinn

3:09 - A Weiser TD down the sideline. Game: Duquesne. Era: Quinn

3:14 - A sack. Game: UMass. Era: Late Wood

3:29 - A sack. Game: Central Michigan. Era: Early Wood.

3:34 - Jordan Johnson in the open field. working to the sideline. Game: Bowling Green. Era: Quinn

3:37 - A sack. Game: Miami. Era: Quinn

3:39 - Licata to Campbell underneath for a TD. Game: Army. Era: Quinn

3:43 - Johnson breaking through to the left. Game: Baylor. Era: Quinn.

3:48 - A sack. Game: Norfolk State. Era: Quinn

3:49 - Licata to Weiser, plus a nice broken tackle. Game: Miami. Era: Quinn

Break it down:

Quinn Era Wood Era Wins Losses
Offense 21 8 14 15
Defense 16 5 12 9

Duquesne Army Baylor Norfolk State Miami Bowling Green Eastern Michigan Central Michigan Ohio Akron Kent State UMass
By Game 5 5 6 7 5 7 2 4 0 7 0 2
Offense 3 3 5 1 3 4 2 1 0 6 0 1
Defense 2 2 1 6 2 3 0 3 0 1 0 1

It's more even balanced in wins-losses than I felt after first watch, but having nearly a third of the defensive highlights come from Norfolk State, who was a terrible offense even for FCS teams, leaves a bad taste. I would have liked to see more from UMass, which was a fun game.

The Wood Era gets less than 30% of the highlights despite accounting for 36% of the games. More than half of the Quinn Era highlights are from losses.
