Last week, it was Colt Cotten in his superhuman comeback from a catastrophic knee injury that pinned his opponent, this week it was Sean Peacock's turn.
The match between the Buffalo Bulls (5-9, 0-4 MAC) and #20 Old Dominion Monarchs (8-3, 1-1 MAC) started at 133 pounds instead of 125 as usual, but that didn't matter to Peacock. The electric freshman, who has a relentless style of wrestling, didn't blink when he was down 2-0 heading into the second period of his bout, instead, he responded with a pinfall victory less than a minute into the second stanza and more importantly gave UB a 6-0 lead out of the gate.
Then, Colt Cotten took to the mat looking to once again shock the world by upsetting #9 Chris Mecate at 141 pounds; however, the riding time point that Mecate had clinched going into the 3rd period was Cotten's undoing as he was eked out 5-4.
And whatever momentum that Buffalo had gained off of the Peacock pin was gone by halftime; after the Cotten decision, Justin Cooksey was pinned by #12 Alexander Richardson, Danny Graham, making his first dual meet start was dominated by TC Warner and #15 Tristan Warner dominated Rrok Ndokaj 12-3, giving Old Dominion a 17-6 halftime lead.
After half, it wouldn't get much better for UB as they dropped four straight matches until Max Soria bookended Peacock's opening pin with a pinfall of his own. Soria was dominating 9-1 at the end of the 1st period and was able to get Josh Markham on his back in the second stanza. The win is Soria's 18th on the season, and is now at 98 career takedowns, 2 away from reaching 100 for his career, and once he reaches 103 for his career he will move into the top-10 for career takedowns.
It was a difficult dual against a nationally ranked opponent with several ranked wrestlers, but the big positives are the pinfall victories by Sean Peacock and Max Soria, and Colt Cotten following up his pin against Columbia by taking the #9 ranked wrestler in the nation to the very end and only losing due to the bonus riding time point.
Things won't get easier as the Bulls will head to Athens on Sunday to take on MAC foe Ohio in a matinee dual with the match starting at 1 PM. Be sure to check out the updated season records and full results from the match below and stay tuned to Bull Run for more.
