Buffalo Basketball: Josh Freelove Senior Salute

Adam Hunger

The Buzz Before UB: Buffalo is in fact Joshua Freelove's third D-1 school (we love him the most). Most fans are aware the te senior transferred to UB from Alabama State in the SWAC, but prior to arriving in Alabama he in fact played a season with in-conference rival Toledo.

At his most recent stop, Freelove led the Hornets in scoring, with 13.3 points per game. He was the team's best offensive weapon across the board, knocking down 44 three-pointers, 80% of his attempts from the line, and 44% of all field goal attempts. His 13.3 average ranked tenth in the Southwest Athletic Conference.

Senior Moment: For all the attention he's gotten, I think Freelove's value to this team is still underappreciated. Quite simply, he's been everything you could hope for from a one year guy.

As such it's tough to nail down a 'Senior Moment.' Freelove's experience and calm has clearly helped the younger guards on the team, especially in the early going, and he's maintained a double-digit scoring average despite stepping up a notch or three in competition from the SWAC to the MAC.

Ultimately, I have to go with the straight up offensive explosion in the second half against Miami. It was only a week ago, but I don't think it's just the recency effect talking. UB struggled in the first half, and allowed the Redhawks to head into the break with a two point lead. In the second half, Miami enjoyed a 4 point advantage - over Freelove alone, who scored 21 nonstop points in the second half as if to remind us and the rest of the MAC that other may get the attention, but he can score with the best of them.

The definitive Freelove stat for his solitary season in Amherst? The guard has been held under 10 points just 5 times all season. For reference, UB has played... a lot... more than 5 games this season.

Congrats on a great career, Josh! Thanks for spending one season of it with us!
