Buzz Before She Got Here: Thornton's number is retired at Detroit's Frank Cody High School, but she only came to Buffalo after two years playing with the Detroit Titans of the Horizon League. While at Detroit, she was second among the Titans her sophomore year scoring over 9 points a game on the strength of one of the league's best shooting strokes. In that sophomore season Thornton got more than 60% of her points from beyond the three point arc, knocking down 53 three pointers.
Breakout Performance and Underclass Seasons: Thornton's career at Buffalo has been a bit abbreviated thanks to NCAA transfer rules, but she was able to step in immediately, once again featuring as the second-leading scorer on her team, upping her average to nearly 11 ppg. For a stretch in late January and February, she was good for double figures in four straight games.
Senior Moment: Cherridy came into the season looking like one of the Bulls' top offensive threats on a well-balanced squad. Unfortunately, she became one of several Bulls who suffered an injury midway through the season. Thornton did help out with 11 points in the big win road win against Pitt that made all of us sit up and notice, and notched season highs in both points and minutes in the very next game, a loss to Saint Bonaventure
And of course this post would be incomplete without passing along this gem from Coach Jack's Twitter account:
