Last year in the state of Ohio 385 lost their lives because of auto accidents involving a driver who had been drinking. During the same year more than 7,000 people were injured on Ohio roads due to an inebriated driver. It is a crime and not a victimless one at that.
So what do you do when one of your star players gets behind the wheel after tipping a few back...
Wait for it...
Sit them one game. If you're the Toledo Rockets basketball coaching staff you sit a kid caught committing what is often considered a felony for just one game.
"Although I remain 100 percent supportive of Justin, our players are held to high standards and when they do not live up to those they face consequences. As a result, Justin will not play in Wednesday's game vs. Ohio." -- Toledo Head Coach Ted Kowalcyzk
Now don't get me wrong the matchup against Ohio is a big game for Toledo.
The Rockets have just finished rebuilding into a conference power after a point shaving scandal and so issues with their APR. In a conference where the top two seeds receive a triple bye there is a lot to be said for finishing near the top.
Recently Marcus Smart of Oklahoma State shoved a fan during the game. The fan can be said saying "Go Back To Africa" and Smart said the also called him a racial slur. For the incident, one shove of a mouth fan, Smart was suspended three games.
For getting behind the Wheel of a car drunk Justin Drummond misses just one game.
Let's put one game in perspective. Back in the summer preceding the 2012 season two UB players get into a fight with one punching the other. The player who threw the blow was suspended one game, or 8% of the football season.
For getting behind the Wheel of a car drunk Justin Drummond misses just one game.
I would hope that if, God forbid, the shoe was on the other foot my schools Athletic Director and the fans would call for no less than three games, or about 1/10th of the season.
But at Toledo for getting behind the Wheel of a car drunk Justin Drummond misses just one game.
