Our new football coach is not even on campus and hoops has not even played every little 3 team yet but it's time for Bull Run to start up baseball coverage.
The school released its schedule today for a season that kicks off in mid February. Of course starting so early means that UB, like all northern teams, start the year on big road trips. Buffalo starts the season on a 19-game road trip.
Ron Torgalski has produced UB's best two seasons of the modern era in 2013 and 2014. UB nearly won the MAC East and was robbed of the title do to an unrescheduled rainout in 2013 and made it past the first round of the MAC tournament last season.
But UB lost Mike Burke and Tyler Mautner to the Major League draft along with many other seniors. It will be a real challenge for the Bulls to build on their recent success.
The season kicks off on February 13 with a three game weekend in North Carolina at Garnder-Webb. Like many of these early season weekends this is a series where more than two teams will meet at a host location and do some form of round robin play.
The Bulls will open up the season against James Madison before taking on the Gardner-Webb Bulldogs on Saturday, February 14 and Sunday, Febuary 15.
The following weekend, the team will have four games played at VMU. Two games will be against against Maryland Eastern Shore and a pair of games against Virginia Military Institute,.
UB will wrap up February with two days of doubleheaders (4 games) at Bucknell. The first set will be played on February 28 and second will be the following day, March 1st.
UB will then head to Dayton for four games as they play Wright State (March 6th), a doubleheader against the Flyers (March 7th) and and a single game against Missouri State on Sunday, March 8.
Finally, if the weather permits, UB will play a game in Western New York on March 10th. The Bulls are scheduled to travel down main street to take on Big Four Rival Canisius.
Then it's off to Houston, for UB's first ever games against the Cougars. Last season Houston did not win the American but did qualify for the NCAA Tournament .
These 19 road games will hopefully prepare a young UB team for conference play.
"With such a young inexperienced team, the early season games are going to be very important in helping our guys gain valuable experience before the start of conference play" -- UB Baseball coach Ron Torgalski.
UB's first home game of the year will also be the game which opens up Mid American Conference Play. A three game set starts March 20 when Northern Illinois comes to town at Amherst Audobon Field.
Then back on the road as UB closes out the month of March with five straight road games. They have a single game at Canisius, a three game set in Muncie against Ball State and finally a trip down to Oleanfor a single game against St. Bonaventure.
April is where the Bulls hit the meat of their MAC schedule, playing 15 total games including 12 MAC contests. UB opens April with a three game set against MAC East foe Ohio at Amherst Audobon Field on April 3-5.
UB then hits the road for three games against Miami (OH) at McKie Field before returning home for five home games, two against Canisius and three against Central Michigan.
On April 24 the Bulls will head to Western Michigan for a three game weekend set before closing out the month at home against the Niagara Purple Eagles on April 28 at 2:00 pm.
The Bulls close out the final month of the regular season with a monstrous 12 games in 16 days.
UB hosts MAC East rival Kent State on May 1-3 for three games before hosting St. Bonaventure for a doubleheader on Tuesday, May 5. The Bulls then head to Akron for a three game set and host Niagara for a single contest on May 12. UB closes out the regular season with three tough games against Bowling Green on the road.
