Because of the way New York went about establishing the SUNY system Buffalo has a long history against many of the current State colleges and universities in the SUNY system. In some cases that history goes back more than a hundred years.
But it was not until 1977 when UB first played one of those schools when both were members of the State University system.
In 1977 it was Brockport who soundly beat UB 17-7. Brockport was one of the better schools that season and the Bulls were playing an abbreviated four game season as they rebooted the program after it was shut down in 1970.
Buffalo would get revenge, their first SUNY win, and the first program victory since 1970 the following season. Buffalo downed the Golden Eagles 35-31 and they did it in dramatic fashion.
Gary Quatrani returned a kickoff return for 64 yards and caught a 38 yard touchdown pass all in the last minute of play to lift Buffalo over Brockport. Quatrani had three scores on the day. He also scored on a 43 yard strike from Buffalo Quarterback Jim Rodriquez earlier in the contest.
