BaseBull Weekend - Buffalo Opens MAC Play

Opening up Conference play at "Home" could help Buffalo start off conference play with some wins.

Buffalo's 10-9 record to date has them unexpectedly entering conference play at the top of the the MAC East. UB's surprising start has been fueled in large part by relatively consistent quality pitching which has allowed the Bulls to win games even when their bats are quiet. In past years that has not been the case.

Junior Mike Burkehas already once been named the Mid-American Conference East Division's Pitcher of the Week. The Bulls pitching staff as a whole are sporting the third best ERA in the conference (4.19), the third lowest opposing batting average (.274), and first in the conference in saves (4).

At the plate UB is hoping that Jimmy Topps continues the hot streak which earned him MAC East Division Player of the Week. Topps was a tough out last week batting .615 (8-13) over six games. On Wednesday, he went 2-2 with a walk against a Vanderbilt team that came into the day ranked second in the nation.

He then helped the Bulls to a doubleheader sweep with two singles and a triple, scoring all three times, in a win over Oakland. He then capped the day with a single and stolen base, along with a perfectly executed suicide squeeze to drive in a run in a win over Dayton. On Sunday, he ended his week with another perfect day, going 2-2 with an RBI, another walk and two more stolen bases in a win over Dayton.

CMU is basking in their program's 2000th win. Right now the chips have two players batting above .300. Sophomore Nick Regnier and freshman Logan Regnier lead the chips who overall are batting .250 on the year.
