Coach Witherspoon pull in his third LOI of the year when Andre McPhail from Deer Valley High School. After hish school McPhail did prep stints at La Jolla and Stoneridge. He joins Jarryn Skeete and Stan Wier as this years incoming freshmen.
During his time as a juco player Andre played a lot of is small forward and power forward. At times, when they played small, he would fill in at center.
The knock on McPhail coming out of Deer Valley was that he was not very useful as a guard.
I played post all through high school, and scouting services mostly knocked me. Saying, I was nothing but a under-sized big and I couldn’t step out and basically play a guard. I really just never had a chance to. I’m really working hard on my consistency, ball handling, perimeter defense, shooting, and go to moves. -- Andre McPhail
Even with some detractors in the scouting community McPhail pulled offers from Cal-Poly, Colgate, Hartford, North Eastern, and Portland State.
At La Jolla Prep he played 25 games putting up an average of 14 points and 10 rebound per contest. Due to institutional issues with La Jolla he transferred to Stoneridge. In his first 11 games he averaged 7.2 points, 8.2 rebounds and 1.8 blocks. After working his way into the starting rotation for the final seven games he manged five double-doubles while averaging 11.2 points and 10.3 rebounds per game.
