The 1990 Bulls were in the middle of a disappointing decade between the '86 9-2 team and the '96 8-3 team. A bright spot came on October 20th as the Bulls snapped a 7 game losing streak, defeating Brockport at home. The next week they traveled down the 90 to face the Mercyhurst Lakers in Erie.
The game was exciting from the beginning, UB fell behind 21-20 in the first quarter, scoring on a 65 yard run by Alan Bell and a 31 yard touchdown reception by Ahmed. In the second quarter, Mercyhurst's offense cooled down but UB's did not, Frank Reilly tossed touchdown passes to Jim Duprey and Ahmed as UB took a 34-21 lead into the half.
Mercyhurst closed within 5 points, but a Tom McLaughlin field goal and a 1 yard plunge for Alan Bell's 3rd touchdown of the day ensured a UB victory.
In addition to Ahmed breaking a 12-year single-game reception record, the team set a record for total offense gained in a single-game, racking up 625 yards. The stars of the day were also all local products...Quarterback Reilly from Olean, Running Back Bell from Grover Cleveland, and Ahmed from St. Joe's.
