How did our 2011 opponents do this week?

Led by a surprisingly good Mid American Conference Showing UB's opponents put up a 8-3 record this week. The Biggest upset was BSU taking down Indiana but everywhere you saw teams winning games they should and playing hard against very good AQ teams even in the losses.

Of note for UB was how Stony Brook manhandled the Miners in the first half. Eventually they wore down but this is an FCS team who is considered a contender for the Playoffs and who just showed they can run with an FBS team. UTEP provides a more hostile environment but culturally and physically than Buffalo and the Miners, though down, are still not a bottom feeding Bowl Subdivision squad.

Looking further ahead Temple finally has a coach that knows how to use a feature back and Northern Illinois is not missing a beat. Ohio looks strong and Miami gave the#21 team in the nation all they could handle. UB has a very difficult stretch during the middle of the season.

UTEP Edges FCS Stony Brook 31-24 in OT Post-Game Celebration Thread - Miner Rush
It wasn't pretty. In fact, it was downright ugly. The UTEP Miners edged the FCS Stony Brook Seawolves 31-24 Saturday night in the Sun Bowl. The Miners trailed 24-10 with just over 3:00 minutes to play in the third quarter. Luckily, the Miners offense finally found some rhythm and UTEP's defense did just enough to hold off the Seawolves.

Ball State 27, Indiana 20. - The Crimson Quarry
From the stats, what stood out was the ability of Ball State to run the ball so well with a bunch of guys who had never carried the ball in college. Edward Wright-Baker seemed to have been reasonably edge tube in the first half. We all knew this could be a long season in the Big Ten, but I did not expect to lose this one.

UConn 35, Fordham 3: One position battle resolved, but another has emerged - The UConn Blog
What we saw on the field yesterday was not a stark departure from what we would have seen under Randy Edsall, but the changes were welcome ones. The Huskies did throw down the field more and did so with some success. The option also looks like a good fit for the personnel. It felt like the Huskies took a couple of possessions to get going, but there are some weapons there, especially if McCombs can perform at anywhere near this level against FBS talent.

Tennessee: Win 42-16 Vs Montana

Rocky Top Talk - For Tennessee Volunteers Fans
UT's running game sputtered all night and, other than one moderately-long Tauren Poole scramble, never got on track. The Vols' struggles to run the football Saturday night in a 42-16 win over the undermanned Grizzlies is no reason to panic. But it is the chief reason why none of us can feel truly comfortable with a scoreboard-snazzy win that fell way short on style points.

That read belly option Ohio abused Golden with the past two years? Well, Villanova coach Andy Talley made it a staple of the Wildcat offense last night and Heater's fire-eaters were not even fazed by it. On offense, what have I been telling Golden and Matt Rhule for the past two years? Establish the run behind franchise back Bernard Pierce, then use play-action off fakes to Pierce to find open receivers roaming through enemy secondaries. Something that was so difficult for Golden to grasp Loeffler got right away.

3 different backs getting used right away, 5 wide formations. None of the weirdness of the play-calling or personnel choosing of the previous regime. Chandler Harnish on point. 12 of 19 for 195 and 5 TDs to 5 different players (Luke Eakes, Nathan Palmer, Akeem Daniels, Jamal Womble, Martel Moore). Womble's run on a screen specifically was a thing of beauty. 11 rushes for 80 yds and a TD himself. The offensive line lived up to their hype.

Quarterback James Franklin's debut was far from beautiful, and the offensive line made quite a few mistakes, but thanks to the bend-don't-break defense Dave Steckel copyrighted last year, the Tigers beat Miami (Ohio) 17-6 at Faurot Field in Columbia. More analysis to come (obviously), but consider this your evening live thread. M-I-Z!

Eastern Michigan: Win 41-9 vs Howard

Howard Bison vs. Eastern Michigan Eagles - Recap - September 04, 2011 - ESPN Dominique Sherrer and Javonti Greene each ran for 120 yards and touchdown to lead Eastern Michigan to a 41-9 victory against Howard on Sunday in a game that was pushed back a day because of thunderstorms in the Midwest. Julien David gave Howard (0-1) a 6-0 lead in the first quarter, returning an interception 29 yards for a touchdown. The 2-point conversion failed. Trailing 9-3, the Eagles scored 24 points in the second quarter to take command.

Led by first year head coach Luke Fickell, Ohio State began the game tentatively, running the ball on four of their first five offensive plays, before quarterback Joe Bauserman's 28-yard pass to Verlon Reed on a crossing route moved the Buckeyes into Akron territory. Two plays later, Bauserman would scramble into the endzone following a botched hand-off attempt, and Ohio State would take a 7-0 lead, a lead they would never give up.

FalconBlog--Triumphs and Trials in the BGSU Falcon Nation: Falcons Serve Notice? Blow Vandals Out?
Schilz had a very strong game, particularly in the first half. He finished the game 19 of 31 for 291 yards, 2 TDs and no INTs. That's 61% completions and not on a bunch of dinks, but a number of downfield throws. Things were a little less productive in the second half, but by then BG was just killing clock. He finished with a QB rating of 161, which is very strong. When Schilz was pressured, it looked like he handled it well, and he showed some mobility, running for a first down and throwing on the run a couple of times. His play was very encouraging.
