BUFFALO, N.Y. -- University at Buffalo President Satish K. Tripathi has announced that John...

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- University at Buffalo President Satish K. Tripathi has announced that John Lambert, senior associate athletic director, will serve as interim athletic director of the Division of Athletics effective March 14.

He succeeds Warde Manuel, who earlier this week was appointed athletic director at the University of Connecticut, beginning in March.

UB is launching a national search, and expects to name a permanent athletic director within three months.

"I am grateful to John for his willingness to serve in this important role in an interim capacity, and I extend my thanks and appreciation to Warde and the entire Division of Athletics team for their continuing commitment to our university's vision of excellence," Tripathi said.

"Warde's exceptional leadership over the past six years and the ongoing efforts and dedication of the entire UB athletics leadership team have set our university's intercollegiate athletics program on a clear course of excellence. Thanks in large part to this strong leadership, we are also very well positioned to attract outstanding candidates in this national search."

Lambert joined the university in 1996 and currently leads the athletics division's development effort after several successful years overseeing the external relations operation for athletics. Among his many substantial contributions to the university and its athletics program over the years, he was instrumental in the department's move to Division I-A and the Mid-American Conference, created a highly successful endowed scholarship program within the athletics division and has helped to guide a number of significant capital projects to fruition.

He has been widely recognized for his professional achievements, earning many system-wide and national awards, including being named Division I-A Marketer of the Year by the National Association of Collegiate Marketing Administrators in 2001. Within the Western New York region, he serves on the boards of The Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame and The Buffalo Niagara Sports Commission.

Nationally, he is an active member of the Council for Advancement and Support of Education and the National Association of Athletic Development Directors.

Lambert lives in Amherst.

Tripathi's message to the university community announcing Lambert's appointment is available here:

Akron entered the week in control of the West division with a 10-1 record. But the Zips will face Buffalo (second at 9-2) and Kent State (third at 8-3) in their last two games of the regular season. Akron (No. 61 RPI), which has wins at Mississippi State and Marshall, should be the favorite to win the MAC tourney, especially with Zeke Marshall (3.2 bpg) inside. Eastern Michigan leads the weaker East division at 6-5. The rest of the East possessed sub-.500 conference records entering the week.

StatSheet Projects Buffalo as NIT Eight Seed

This is an upgrade over where we have been in their rankings (projected CBI)... A 4-1 showing against the East would make UB a recipient of the double bye, a 20 game regular season winner, and likely a lock for the NIT (at least)

While it is difficult to bid farewell to such a valued colleague and university citizen, Warde’s...

While it is difficult to bid farewell to such a valued colleague and university citizen, Warde’s selection to lead one of the nation’s top Division I programs reflects the national reputation he has achieved through his outstanding leadership and impressive achievements here at UB.

Since his appointment in July 2005, Warde has served our university and the UB Division of Athletics with distinction, raising UB athletics’ national profile and helping to build a nationally competitive Division I program dedicated to the pursuit of academic and athletic excellence.

Warde’s intense commitment to excellence -- on and off the field -- has been evident across UB men’s and women’s athletics programs. The impressive accomplishments achieved under his watch include the 2008 football team’s Mid-American Conference Championship and first bowl game appearance in UB’s history with the 2009 International Bowl. In 2007, under Warde’s leadership, the UB Athletics Department became the only school in the nation that year to be named a Program of Excellence by the NCAA Division I-A Athletic Directors.

With a strong focus on academics always at the forefront, Warde also has overseen a substantial investment in facility additions and renovations that have contributed immensely to our student-athletes’ academic and athletic experience.

A national search for a new athletic director will begin immediately. We will update the university community regarding an interim director within the week.

In the meantime, I know I speak for our entire university community in extending my sincere thanks, congratulations and best wishes to Warde as he takes on this new leadership opportunity. Please join me in wishing Warde and his family much happiness and continued success as they prepare for this exciting transition.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

STORRS, Conn. - Warde J. Manuel, who has had a distinguished career in intercollegiate athletics that ranges from being a student-athlete to a director of athletics, has been named the new Director of Athletics at the University of Connecticut by President Susan Herbst.

Manuel, a 1990 graduate of the University of Michigan where he played both football and track and field, has most recently been the Director of Athletics at the University at Buffalo for the past six years.

"We are incredibly proud and thrilled that Warde will be joining the Husky family," said Herbst. "UConn is one of the great American universities and our athletics program is the envy of many. It's because of this that we were able to attract an amazing pool of candidates from across the nation - and an ideal, stand-out candidate of Warde's exceptionally-high caliber. He will play the integral, and even transformational, role in the future of UConn athletics. It's a great day for this university."

Manuel led a 20-sport program at Buffalo, an institution that is a member of the prestigious American Association of Universities. Buffalo enjoyed an unparalleled period of success during his time there from an athletic, academic and community service perspective.
