I had hoped to have a much more active “close out” month in September but life being what it is that was derailed by really important things, this is just sports.

In case you don’t know, I lost my Brother to a sudden and unexpected illness. I’m one of seven kids so we all gathered back in Buffalo to say goodbye and be there for his daughter and each other.

Kind of puts perspective on things, no?

So before that came up I had already mostly decided on “where to go” with SBNation deciding that Buffalo fans are not going to have a place on SBNation anymore.

The answer is... not another blog...

Why Not another blog?

In 2009 nobody was writing UB football except the Buffalo news and their coverage was mostly negative. Conrad and I started up sites nearly at the same time without ever realizing it. Honestly, his site was better and if he had gotten traction I might have spent time helping to write for “Eight wins is enough” (Conrad fact check me on the name)

Today there is a lot of engaging fun editorial content, and it’s done by people far better at writing than me. So I feel like, in a way, the need for a “Bull Run” blog has passed. I don’t think my voice adds anything, anymore.

Let’s face it, composition is not my strongest move.

So instead of a new blog, we’re going to discord.

Why Discord

Why discord technically it’s a fantastic platform. Works well on mobile and has a ton of add ons which could help grow the site. You’ll never need to use two factor authentication if you want to contribute and it’ll be a lot easier to throw up pictures and notes from events live if that’s your thing.

It will also be easier for the community to push forward the “sports bar” mentality I was shooting for when I started Bull Run 14 years ago. By allowing you all to create discussion threads and prompts rather than trying to compose a “fan post”.

So October for me is time to hammer down Discord, learn the system, and possibly put some money into the site to add boosts. The free version of discord works, but some of the bells and whistles you get at higher tiers could be very fun.

Creatively I may endeavor to do more on youtube, and bring back the “Blue Bull” videos, but that’s not really going to be a thing until we’re fully gathered on discord.

Here is the link, if you want to join.

The UB Volleyball team was swept twice at Western Michigan this weekend. Their record is now 8–6 (0–2 MAC).

In the first match, Buffalo was able to get strong offensive performances from their middle blockers. Senior middle blocker Abby Leigh led the team with 11 kills, and did not make an error, hitting 0.733. Senior middle blocker Courtney Okwara had eight kills and 1 error, hitting 0.583. But unfortunately, none of the other UB front row attackers hit above 0.150. The Bulls didn’t help themselves by picking up 13 service errors but just 4 aces.

Sophomore setter Mandy Leigh had 31 assists, and moved into 10th place all-time in assists. Abby Leigh led the team with 5 blocks, while Mandy Leigh had 4 and Okwara had 3. Mandy Leigh and junior libero Hayley Montoya led the team with 10 digs.

In the second match, Buffalo played a close first set, losing 25–23 despite leading late at 22–21. The Bulls hit 0.400 and had 19 kills, while the Broncos hit 0.281 and had 11 kills. However, the Bulls had six service errors, which was just enough for the Broncos to take the set.

The Bulls serving improved in the next two sets (just 4 errors), but their hitting efficiency dropped. Still Buffalo had a late lead at 20–19 in the second set, and trailed just by 2 at 23–21 in the third set. In each set, WMU made the big plays when it counted and pulled out the victory.

Fifth year outside hitter Cali Assaley led the Bulls with 9 kills and Okwara had 8. Mandy Leigh had 7 kills (her career high) and just one error, and that put her close to triple-double territory as she also had 29 assists and led the team with 13 digs. Okwara and junior right side Emma Gielas led the team with 4 blocks each.

Notes:

Senior defensive specialist Jenna Sonnenberg was in uniform, but did not play in either match. Sophomore defensive specialist Julianna Lopez was not in uniform.

Sophomore Maria Futey was the Bulls libero in the second match, the first time she has played that position. She picked up 12 digs.

The Bulls had 10 service errors and just 3 aces in the second match. Definitely an area that needs improvement.

Up next for the Bulls: a road match at Akron on Wednesday, September 28 at 6pm. Buffalo returns to Alumni Arena on Friday, September 30 to face Northern Illinois at 6pm (ESPN+). On Saturday, October 1, they face the Huskies again at 1pm (YouTube).

Personal note: this will be my last volleyball post on Bull Run, something I started doing in 2014.
Senior setter Emma Puzausky | Paige Miller

The UB volleyball team ended its non-conference season with one win and two losses at the Florida Gulf Coast tournament, making their record 8–4.

Senior setter Emma Puzausky, who had started just two matches previously in her career, started and was the Bulls’ only setter in the FGCU tournament, as sophomore setter Mandy Leigh was unavailable due to injury.

In the first match against St. Francis (Brooklyn), Buffalo won 3–0 and hit 0.282, compared to just 0.170 for St. Francis. The Bulls were led by senior right side Emma Gielas with 12 kills, senior middle blocker Abby Leigh with 10 kills (and zero attack errors) and senior middle blocker Courtney Okwara with 7 kills. Although I didn’t see the match (no live stream), whenever the right side and middle blockers are the leading scorers, it is because the team’s passing was right on target and the setter made good decisions and good sets. Puzausky set a career high with 29 assists.

The next match, against FGCU (a team that went to the 2nd round of the NCAA Tournament a year ago) began promisingly for the Bulls. Although the Bulls dropped the first set 25–22, they came back from a 5 point deficit to trail just 23–22 before finally losing. Buffalo took a marathon second set 32–30, leading most of the way. A kill from Okwara gave the Bulls their third set point at 31–30. Because Buffalo was out of (or nearly out of) substitutions in the long set, Buffalo coach Scott Smith let Okwara serve, something she has not done all year. Okwara served an ace, just the second of her career, and the match was tied at 1–1.

Buffalo dropped the next two sets, 25–21 (despite leading 19–18) and 25–17. For most of this match, the Bulls could not work Abby Leigh into the offense, as she scored just 4 kills. Nor could they get Gielas into the offense for the first three sets, as she had just 4 kills after 3 sets. But in the 4th set, the Bulls made an effort to get Gielas going, and she responded with 4 kills in the final set, but it wasn’t enough. When two of your best scorer’s aren’t scoring, it’s tough to win. Okwara had 12 kills and sophomore outside hitter Katrin Trebichavská had 16. Puzauski shattered her career high, picking up 44 assists.

Against Florida Atlantic, the Bulls were swept, and hit just 0.087. The Bulls were able to work Abby Leigh back into the offense, but not Gielas or Trebichavská. Abby Leigh had 8 kills and hit 0.357, Okwara had 7 kills and hit 0.400, but no other UB player hit above 0.118. Fifth year outside hitter Cali Assaley led the team with 9 kills. Puzausky had 28 assists and led the team with 10 digs.

Notes:

The MAC schedule begins as Buffalo travels to Western Michigan for matches on Friday, September 23 and Saturday, September 24.

Puzausky picked up 101 assists in 10 sets, that’s an average of over 10 assists per set, generally considered a good average.

Junior defensive specialist Emilie Davis has turned into a serving weapon. She had just 1 career ace up until the 7th match of her junior season. And in the next 5 matches, she has 7 aces (and just 5 errors).

Senior middle blocker Abby Leigh | Paul Hokanson/UBBulls.com

This just in: Abby Leigh is having a monster season.

You probably knew that already.

Leigh, a senior middle blocker, led Buffalo in points scored, kills, blocks and hitting percentage in a 3–1 Buffalo win over Youngstown State; and then led Buffalo in kills, points scored and hitting percentage in a 3–0 sweep of previously undefeated Bucknell. She hit over 0.440 in both matches. Other than that, she didn’t do much.

So far this season, Leigh is hitting 0.390 (fifth in the MAC), leads the team in points scored, hitting percentage, total blocks and is second in aces (and one of only two UB players to have more aces than service errors). Her 17 solo blocks is 16 more (not a typo) than anyone else on the team, and 7 more than any other MAC player. Leigh leads the MAC in total blocks (34) and blocks per set (1.21).

Against Youngstown State, the Bulls came out flat and dropped the first set 25–18, as their serve receive and passing struggled. But after that Buffalo was in control, winning the next three sets 25–18, 25–22 and 25–20. Leigh had 13 kills, as did senior middle blocker Courtney Okwara and junior right side Emma Gielas.

The Bulls picked up 10 aces, 4 from sophomore defensive specialist Julianna Lopez, three from sophomore outside hitter Katrin Trebichavská and three from junior defensive specialist Emilie Davis. Davis, who has not seen a lot of playing action in her career, had just one ace previously in her career. Lopez had two aces all season before running off four aces in a row. Sophomore setter Mandy Leigh had 45 assists. Abby Leigh led the team with 4 blocks. Junior libero Hayley Montoya had 11 digs.

Against undefeated Bucknell, Buffalo fell behind 14–11 in the first set, but then scored seven straight points, served by Lopez who recorded 2 aces in that span. Abby Leigh had 3 kills in that streak. Buffalo would never trail again in that set.

In the second set, Buffalo took a 9–7 lead over the Bison. What happened next was absolutely stunning. A kill from Trebichavská gave Buffalo a 10–7 lead, then Abby Leigh stepped to the service line, and Buffalo ran off 15 straight points. Leigh had two aces, but had plenty of help from her teammates in that stretch.

Buffalo took a 5–0 lead in the third set, giving them 21 consecutive points. The Bulls never trailed in the third set.

Buffalo finishes undefeated in this week’s WNY Invite Tournament, and is now 7–2 for the season.

Notes:

Buffalo plays next weekend in a tournament at Florida Gulf Coast University. FGCU advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament last year.

The next Buffalo home matches will be on September 30 (6pm) and October 1 (1pm) against Northern Illinois University

In that 16–0 run in the second set, Abby Leigh came up with the Almost-But-Not-Quite Play of the Match™: middle blockers don’t play back row defense much except in the one rotation where they serve. A Bucknell attack looked like it would land, but Leigh came diving in to keep the ball off the floor, the dig went straight to Okwara, who then set the ball to sophomore outside hitter Maria Futey in the back row and Futey came up with the kill. Having Futey (and occasionally others) attack out of the back row is something new in the Bulls offense, and adds just a little more diversity to the UB attack.

Play of the Match™: Buffalo leads 8–5 in the third set. A Bucknell attack was blocked by Mandy Leigh. The ball then ricocheted off her head to Abby Leigh, whose attempted dig went into the net and looked like it would drop to the floor. Futey, who had dived to cover the ball when it hit Mandy Leigh, and was laying on the floor, just managed to pop the ball high in the air and barely over the net. The ensuing Bucknell attack resulted in a solo block by ... can you guess? ... Abby Leigh.

Okwara missed the first two weeks of the season with an injury. In both matches, she looked sharp and attacked and blocked well. The connection between setter Mandy Leigh and her two middle blockers during these two matches was excellent.

I don’t think I have ever seen a 16–0 run. I don’t think I have ever seen a UB player pick up four consecutive aces (I have seen more, but not from UB).

Bulls in the Pros: Former UB Volleyball Player Andrea Mitrovic has signed a professional contract with Karayolları Spor Kulübü based in Ankara, Turkey. Previously she had played in Greece and Romania. Karayolları is in the second league of the Turkish professional leagues, having been relegated down after a poor season in the top Turkish league. I’m sure Karayolları wants to move back up, and so hiring Mitrovic seems like they are placing a lot of confidence in her to help achieve this move. Also, the Turkish leagues are generally considered a higher quality league than those in Greece or Romania. Mitrovic also plays for Team Canada. Another former UB volleyball player, Polina Prokudina, does not appear to be on any professional team in 2022-23. Last season she played in Greece (but on a different team than Mitrovic)

Sophomore outside hitter Maria Futey | Paige Miller

The UB Volleyball team improved its record to 5–2 on the season taking down cross-town rival Canisius by a score of 3–1 at Koessler Athletic Center on Tgursday night.

With regular setter Mandy Leigh not 100%, senior setter Emma Puzausky got her second career start. Puzausky had played well the previous weekend leading the Bulls to a 0.423 hitting percentage against Rider in the third set. But against Canisius, Buffalo’s passing broke down, and Puzausky didn’t have a lot of good passes to work with. It’s impossible to say how much of the problem was the passing and how much was the setting, but Buffalo hit 0.000 in the first set and lost to Canisius 25–19.

Bulls coach Scott Smith put Leigh into the lineup for the second set. Smith also inserted senior middle blocker Courtney Okwara into the lineup for the second set (Okwara’s first appearance of the season, after missing two weeks because of an injury), and Smith moved sophomore Maria Futey from defensive specialist to outside hitter. The changes all made a difference. Buffalo’s passing improved dramatically, and with Leigh at setter, the Bulls hit over 0.300 in the second set and took the set 25–19.

In particular, Futey broke open the second set with tough serving, including one ace, as the Bulls went on a 6–0 run to take a 12–5 lead. And Futey wasn’t done. In the third set, Futey served another 6–0 run, including one ace, to break that set open. This is becoming common for Futey, who had an even longer run against Rider the previous weekend to break open the first set of that match.

The Bulls hit over 0.400 in the third and fourth sets, and 0.285 for the match. Sophomore outside hitter Katrin Trebichavksá led the Bulls with 16 kills and a 0.500 hitting percentage. Okwara had 10 kills (in just 3 sets) and hit 0.533. Junior right side Emma Gielas also had 10 kills and hit 0.350.

Senior middle blocker Abby Leigh had 9 blocks and sister Mandy Leigh had 3 blocks. Futey and Trebichavská led the team with 8 digs each, and junior libero Hayley Montoya (who played for Canisius last year) had 7 digs. Mandy Leigh had 35 assists in three sets.

Notes:

Senior libero Jenna Sonnenberg was not in uniform. She did not play in last week’s games, but was in uniform.

The Bulls had one of their better serving days, with 10 aces and 12 errors. Seven of the errors belong to Trebichavská, who has struggled with accuracy so far this year. KT did pick up 3 aces, Futey had 2 aces, and Abby Leigh tied her career high with 4 aces.

Buffalo out-blocked Canisius 11–4.

Buffalo continues in the WNY Invite tournament, with an 11am match against Youngstown State at Alumni Arena on Friday. The tournament concludes when Buffalo faces Bucknell at Alumni Arena at 5pm. Both matches are free, and will be streamed on YouTube.

Some NCAA Volleyball news: a new women’s volleyball regular season attendance record was set last night, when 15,797 fans came out to CHI Health Center Arena in Omaha to watch #2 Nebraska and #17 Creighton. The old record was 14,022 when those same two teams faced each other in the same arena in 2018. Check out the photos on the NCAA Volleyball Instagram, especially that second photo. Wow!

The UB Volleyball team swept Cleveland State to finish second at the Lehigh Steel Tournament, with a 2–1 record. For the season, Buffalo is now 4–2.

Buffalo was led by junior right side Emma Gielas, who picked up 11 kills and made just two errors for a 0.500 hitting percentage. Gielas had five kills in the first set, one of them giving Buffalo a 24–15 lead. The Vikings then scored the next six points to make the final set score close.

In the second set, Buffalo won 25–10, hitting 0.414 while holding the Vikings to a negative hitting percentage. Sophomore outside hitter Maria Futey picked up five kills in the set, plus back-to-back aces (the second of which gave Buffalo a 16–3 lead).

Buffalo fell behind early in the third set, but was able to pull even at 14–14 on a kill from Gielas, and then senior middle blocker Abby Leigh took over. Buffalo won the next three points on two blocks by Leigh and a kill by Leigh to make the score 17–14. After a Cleveland State point and then a Cleveland State service error, Leigh added two more points on a solo block and a kill. The Bulls led 20–15 and continued to enlarge the lead during the rest of the set.

Leigh and Gielas were both named to the all-Tournament team.

Notes:

Lehigh was the tournament champion, with a 2–1 record, and they held the tie-break because of their head-to-head win over Buffalo. Buffalo nearly came away with the tournament title, as Lehigh fell behind Rider 2–0 (a Rider win would have given Buffalo the tournament championship); but Lehigh won the next three sets, 15–12 in the fifth set.

Futey picked up four aces against Cleveland State, her career high. Sophomore outside hitter Katrin Trebichavská had two aces (she leads the team with 11 on the season) and sophomore defensive specialist Julianna Lopez also had 2 aces.

Buffalo had to adjust its normal serving mechanics, because of the very limited space beyond the end-line at Lehigh. The Bulls servers could take at most three small steps or two larger steps. In particular, Trebichavská had to make major modifications to her approach, as she almost always stands as far back as possible and runs up to the end line, gaining extra velocity on her serve because of her forward momentum. But at Lehigh, KT could only take two steps before hitting the ball, a major modification to what she normally does.

Abby Leigh finished with 5 blocks, including 3 solo blocks

Sophomore setter Mandy Leigh (Abby’s sister) had 29 assists, and also three kills with no errors.

Trebichavská and Futey led the team with 8 digs each, while junior libero Hayley Montoya had 7 digs.

Buffalo next plays in the WNY Invite tournament. On Thursday, September 8, 2022, Buffalo will play at Canisius (Koessler Athletic Center) at 7pm. The next day, Buffalo will face Youngstown State at 11am at Alumni Arena, and then will finish the tournament against Bucknell at 5pm at Alumni Arena. All games are free.

Check out the photo on the UB Volleyball Instagram feed at https://www.instagram.com/p/CiEQ9yPMSkS. That’s my photo! And they gave me credit! (The last time UB used one of my photos, they didn’t give me credit). Still, the photo seems too yellow, and normally I would have fixed it, but I didn’t have a computer with me to fix the color balance. But you know what photographers always say: “Any photo of UB Volleyball is a good photo”. (Yes, they really say that)
