46 for 46: #2 Don't Believe the Big School Hype

Ezra Shaw

One of the knocks on Mack is the level of competition from the MAC. Interesting points when looking at the mother ship of college football - Alabama.

A highly touted LB who came from the best college program of the last decade.  It was a sure bet draft choice. Let’s look at Rolando McClain.  One of the more recent NFL draft busts was stamped on May 15, 2013 McClain had his retirement  announced by the Ravens.  In McClain’s first season, the stats show just a half sack.  McClain labored on the field for the next two forgettable seasons.  The Raiders released McClain.  Lack of production on the field and off-field issues made McClain a wasted draft pick who never lived up to any hype.

"No school is producing more pro prospects than Alabama. Yet it seems no school's players are heading into the NFL with more medical red flags." -Adam Schefter

Baltimore took a flier on McClain and he promptly gets arrested.   In need of some linebacker help, the Ravens picked McClain up earlier this offseason. He responded to that by getting arrested and his third brush with ‘the man’ in the same year.  Could McClain get his act together, sure, but don’t hold your breath.

Earlier this year Joey Ickes, SB Nation writer on Blogging the Boy’s  wrote a great article on buyer beware when you draft an Alabama athlete.

Cyrus Kouandjio failed team physicals at the NFL Combine with a bad knee, also reported was CJ Mosely with multiple injuries of hip, elbow, and shoulder. Adam Schefter of ESPN wrote an article on Alabama players coming to NFL team with mileage.

"Alabama has churned out back-to-back national championships, but a perception exists that it has chewed up some players.

"No school is producing more pro prospects than Alabama. Yet it seems no school's players are heading into the NFL with more medical red flags."
