UB vs. Toledo - By the Numbers

Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

After a heartbreaking loss to the Toledo Rockets, some quick stats that decided the game.

6:

The amount of times the Bulls reached the charity stripe. UB managed to go the entire first half of the game against the Rockets without drawing one shooting foul. UB didn't get to the line until well into the second half when senior forward Javon McCrea was fouled. McCrea was 2-3 from the charity stripe, while sophomore forward Justin Moss was 1-2, and senior point guard Jarod Oldham was 0-1.

24:

In a stark contrast from the Bulls, the Rockets managed to get to the free throw line a whopping 24 times. This played a key part in the Bulls' defeat as the Rockets were 18-24 from the charity stripe, and several Bulls were in foul trouble, including Jarod Oldham who fouled out of the game late in the second half. Junior guard Julius Brown for the Rockets was a perfect 8 for 8 from the free throw line. Brown also hit the buzzer beater at the end of regulation to propel the Rockets to the victory.

34.5:

After the Bulls came out red hot to start the game on a 9 of 12 tear, including a perfect 4 of 4 from beyond the arc, Buffalo came crashing back down to Earth as they shot just 34.5% for the rest of the contest. Sophomore guard Jarryn Skeete couldn't carry his momentum from the game against Eastern Michigan as he struggled mightily from beyond the arc only hitting 1 of his 5 attempts. Guards Deyshonee Much, and Shannon Evans were unsuccessful from 3, as they both combined to go 0 for 3.

16.7 and 20:

The shooting percentages from the Bulls' and Rockets' benches respectively. This game was decided mostly by the starters, as the Bulls generated 8 points from their bench while the Rockets only mustered 2 points from their bench. The Bulls' lack of firepower from the bench ended up costing the team; when the starters were off the court with a 13 point lead midway through the first half, the Bulls' bench players couldn't keep up with the torrid pace that the starters had began the game with and allowed Toledo to slowly build momentum into halftime which carried over into a big second half for the Rockets.

7:

With his 20 point and 10 rebound night, Javon McCrea had his 7th double-double of the year. A very impressive stat for arguably the MAC's top player who commands a lot of attention in every team's game plan.

5:

The number of losses the Bulls have outside the confines of Alumni Arena. Granted, UB went into Drexel and beat a very tough opponent. But now rookie head coach Bobby Hurley and the Bulls now have road losses to Texas A&M, Niagara, Canisius (game at First Niagara Center), Manhattan (game at Barclays Center), and now a road loss in the MAC to Toledo. This Bulls team has to figure out how to win on the road if it plans to succeed at all this season. The MAC is notorious for being difficult to pick up road wins and the Bulls will need every one they can get if they want to be serious contenders in the MAC East and in the MAC tournament.
