It's odd that UB and Stony Brook have only played each other once before. Odd but understandable since UB was first New York State school to Division one Athletics and had moved on to the Bowl Subdivision before Stony Brook got out of the division III jail cell all SUNY schools were relegated to in the 1980's.

The Bulls had dragged SUNY into the division one era and the fruits of that labor was admission to the MAC and the FBS while Stony Brook and Albany were still completing a move to division one.

It's a shame in some ways because UB has played a lot of FCS games which could have been Stony Brook. Should we be playing Morgan State? Rhode Island? Gardner Webb? Really?

There is a perfectly acceptable FCS program on the other side of the state. Stony Brook puts together a very respectable team pretty much every year it come as close to an instate rival as UB will get. The Seawolves picked up football in the early 1980 and have meticulously moved their way up into one of the strongest non FBS football conferences in the nation.

The first time these two schools met was in 2011, and it looked like what one expects of a FBS / FCS matchup. Branden Oliver was too much for Stony Brook and the combination of Steven Means and Khalil Mack wrote Havoc in the Seawolves

Buffalo started the scoring when Cincinnati transfer Chazz Anderson's chucked a 57-yard TD pass to 2010 Quarterback Alex Dennison in the first quarter. Stony Brook tried to make a game of it and managed to tie the game 7-7 in the second on a 16-yard touchdown pass from Kyle Essington to Jordan Gush.

Then Oliver took over with two long second quarter touchdowns to send UB into the half up 21-7. In the third quarter Anderson hit Devon Hughes to put UB up 28-7 then Oliver finished the days scoring with a 43 yard touchdown.

Among the things UB learned that year is the kind of player Khalil Mack was going to be. Mack had a touchdown called back after he was flagged for excessive celebration on an interception returned. After the game Mack told the press:

"I got overexcited. It'll never happen again. I hurt my teammates." -- Khalil Mack
