When we first met: Toledo...

The 1925 Buffalo Bulls - UB Libraries

Bull Run Takes a weekly look at the first game against their upcoming opponent.

It was a grey rainy Saturday in October as the Buffalo Bull opened up their 1925 season. UB Welcomed Toledo to Rotary Field for the first time.

Toledo was coached by James Dwyer, who a decade earlier had coached at LSU. In 1923 and 24 he coached Toledo to an impressive 11-7 record. They were one of the more competitive teams in the Northwestern Ohio Intercollegiate Athletic Association, a conference which was also home to Bowling Green, Findlay, Defiance, Adrian, and Bluffington.

Buffalo was not expected to do well in the game. UB was finishing up their September practices as a banged up squad that had not yet even set their offensive line.

If is doubtful If the University of Buffalo will be able to send its full strength lineup into the opening game of collegiate football on Saturday afternoon at Rotary Held. Injuries have taken some snap out of the practice sessions, but. there Is a determined spirit among the Bulls to give the strong University of Toledo a Worthy battle. -- Buffalo Morning Express, October 1, 1925

Buffalo was coached by Russ Carrick who found some success while playing for Colgate a decade earlier. As a coach he was not nearly as effective. Carrick owns the record for Buffalo's all time losing streak.

He coached Buffalo from 1924 to 1928 and won just five games. His career record was 5-30-2. His 1925 team was the strongest edition finishing 3-4-1.

A Buffalo offense riddled with injuries was slowed down significantly but their defense made up for it. When all was said and done a UB safety was the only scoring to be had by either team.
