Buffalo runs Oliver Stony Brook..

For some reason this game screamed trap. Stony Brook is probably a top 25 FCS team and they took UTEP to the brink. Buffalo looked good against Pitt but it's been a long, long time since UB put together two modestly good efforts in a row.

Throw in Pitt's lack luster performance against Maine and by the time Kickoff came around the potential for a close game seemed to be in the air and for about 20 minutes Stony Brook kept things interesting. Then something happened, Buffalo's running game picked up steam.

It was a game of first, and it stated with the first opening quarter touchdown of the Jeff Quinn regime. Fittingly it came when the quarterback transfer from Cincinnati threw a touchdown pass to one of last years Quarterback. Alex Dennison who moved to tight end took a short pass from Chad Anderson and scampered 57 yards to put UB ahead early.

We’ve been waiting to make that call and we did a great job getting that play dialed up and first play 57 yard touchdown. There’s nothing better than to start a game and 7 points on the board. Then Brandon -- Jeff Quinn

After trading possessions a couple of times the SeaWolves put together a ten play, ninety two yard drive that chewed up five minutes and consumed more than five minutes.

UB Answered right back when Brandon Oliver broke free for a twenty two yard touchdown. Breaking through the middle Oliver broke several tackles, diving across the goal line dragging a sea Wolf defender behind him.

After forcing a three and out UB took the ball at midfield and, two plays later, sent Oliver to the right side of the field for a 49 yard score.

Buffalo broke the game open in the third Quarter when Anderson threw his second touchdown of the game. This time to freshman Devon Hughes who was wide open in the end zone. UB Completed their scoring on a 43 yard run by Oliver.

There was a lot to like, but as a poster on Chi-Towns thoughts pointed out the devil lies in the details. For instance:

  • Out side of Oliver's three long runs his stat line was 12 carries for twelve yards. There were a ton of times where UB tried to run up the gut only to find a wall of Seawolves. While explosiveness is nice some consistency will be needed.
  • The long drive should never have happened. The Bulls gave up 3 rushing plays of 10 or more yards for a total of 56 (on those three plays). At this point it really felt like this game could be close.
