Around SBN: Will Rhymes 'Fine' After Being Hit By Pitch And Fainting

MAC Power Rankings: Nothing Changes

TeamChangeComment
NIU - Two home games against mid level MAC teams statnd between NIU and the West
Toledo - In addition to needing NIU to trip up, they need to win two on the road
Ohio - It's a mixed bag for Ohio, but if they win the east they will do it with Back to Back ESPN Games
Temple - Temple needs a ton of help to win the East. The Owls need to beat Kent and have Ohio to lose to Miami
Ball State - Ball State got no help from Buffalo today. The Cards draw NIU and Toledo and are tied with EMU who gets Kent / NIU
EMU - EMU is one win away from being Bowl eligible, two away from almost guaranteeing themselves a bowl
WMU - They finish with an almost a give me against Akron. But before that they need to get by Zach Dysert
Miami - They have to win out to get to 6-6 and the draw WMU and Ohio, that loss to Temple may have ended their season
BGSU - One tough test against Ohio and one east game against Buffalo.
Kent - Yes even Kent has a shot at 6-6, They draw EMU and Temple.
CMU - First of the 'better luck next year teams'. Had several flashes of solid play but inconsistent.
Buffalo - Looking at the worlds biggest pillow fight next week where a loss could light Jeff Quinns Chair on Fire
Akron - In the past two season Akron has defeated just one FBS team, and they get a crack at them again next week

EMU's road to a bowl game

Two weeks ago EMU had a 5-3 record and looked almost a lock to make a bowl but the loss to Ball State hurts.

They did beat Buffalo to push themselves to 6-4 but now they have a new problem. They’ve got to get themselves past Kent State which is starting to take on the characteristics on the field as some of those better Doug Martin teams. The absolutely schooled Akron this week and they played Ohio tough on the road only losing by 7. Kent is also still in play for bowl eligibility and the MAC East title.

So now EMU who I would have thought looking at a final stretch of Ball St, Buffalo, Kent and NIU needing 2 wins out of the bunch almost a lock for 7 is now fighting an uphill battle.

Another issue for EMU is will they have a spot available. The MAC has 3 bowl tie-ins that go to the divisional champs and the school with the next best record. With Ohio, Toledo, NIU and even Temple looking at 8+ wins where does that leave a 7-5 Eastern squad? I’m sure bowl organizers are not excited about having a school involved that averages 4,000 a game to try and buy bowl tickets.

Regardless of sitting at 6-4 I would only put EMU’s chances of playing in a bowl at 25%.

Nationally the Bowl picture is bleak...

Even with AQ teams taking 6-6 slots over 7-5 non AQ there may be a bowl shortage tihs season

Not sure where I see all the empty AQ spots

My projections don’t have very many open bowls. The only AQ I have coming short of projections right now is the PAC-12 and then maybe after that the Big XII.

The Big XII’s last bowl is the Pinstripe and if they don’t have 8 eligible for some reason (they are having a great year) then perhaps Temple can sneak into that game. You do have the B1g with a few surplus schools for the first time and they may fill in NYC over the MAC.

Another factor is the SBC. For once they have multiple schools with 8+ wins in ULL and Arkansas State. FIU is also bowl eligible. The MAC does have backups on Papa John’s both sides of the tie-in as well as for St. Pete and New Mexico. I’ll will give Steinbrecher credit where its due for taking those backup slots away from the SBC.

If UTEP is eligible, the MAC may trade the New Mexico for New Orleans like they did last year with Ohio.

The 3 MAC regular tie-ins will be looking at Ohio, Toledo, NIU. Temple has the wins and matches up well in a game against the Big East or CUSA East. Eastern is going to be tough to place at 7-5.
